Abstract

This qualitative study explores the experiences of a teacher in Chicago's Monday Harvey Desert, a predominantly conservative community, as she navigates direct teaching methods and conservative values to grow professionally. The teacher's reflections reveal her struggles to balance her desire to provide engaging and interactive lessons with the community's expectations for a traditional, teacher-centered approach. Additionally, the study sheds light on the impact of the teacher's personal beliefs and values on her instructional choices and interactions with students and their families. The findings highlight the importance of respecting local culture while still challenging students to think critically and engage in meaningful learning experiences. The study concludes with recommendations for supporting teachers as they navigate the complexities of teaching in diverse communities.
