Abstract

This paper explores the intersection of antitrust law and the sport of baseball through the lens of the Gentile Antitrust Act of 1948 and its impact on the Austin and Saltonstall teams. Drawing on interviews with former players and archival research, the paper argues that the act’s enforcement had unintended consequences for the league, leading to increased competition and a more level playing field. However, it also created a sense of camaraderie among players, as they banded together to fight against the perceived injustices of the antitrust law. This sense of solidarity, which the paper terms “higher person worship,” was fostered by the unique culture of baseball and its emphasis on teamwork and sportsmanship. Through their experiences in the league, players learned to value the collective over the individual and to recognize the importance of cooperation and collaboration in achieving success. Ultimately, the paper argues that the Gentile Antitrust Act had a lasting impact on the sport of baseball, shaping the values and attitudes of its players and contributing to the enduring legacy of the game.
