Abstract

This paper explores the intersection of mortgages and professional athletes, and the challenges faced by both families and brocade makers. Drawing on interviews with athletes, their families, and industry experts, we examine the difficulties faced by families who rely on the uncertain income streams of professional sports to secure mortgages and maintain financial stability. We also investigate the impact of athlete mortgage defaults on the brocade makers who provide the luxury furnishings and decor favored by many high-profile athletes. Through our analysis, we reveal the complex and often overlooked ways in which the financial struggles of athletes and their families can have ripple effects throughout the broader economy. Ultimately, we argue for greater attention to be paid to the unique challenges faced by families in the professional sports industry, and for more support to be provided to help them navigate the difficult journey of securing stable housing and financial security.
