Abstract
This paper explores the concept of nation-states in the context of Berlin, Germany and Barnes, England. It argues that despite the prevailing notion of globalization and the erosion of national boundaries, nation-states remain a permanent fixture in the political and social landscape of contemporary societies. Drawing on sociological and historical perspectives, the paper examines the ways in which nation-states are reinforced through collective witnesses, such as monuments, memorials, and public spaces, which serve to reaffirm national identity and reinforce a sense of belonging among citizens. Through a comparative analysis of Berlin and Barnes, the paper shows how these collective witnesses are used to reinforce and challenge dominant narratives of nationhood, and how they are shaped by local, national, and global forces. Ultimately, the paper argues that the permanence of nation-states is not only a product of political and economic factors, but also of cultural and symbolic processes that are deeply embedded in the social fabric of contemporary societies.
