Abstract

This paper explores the concept of leadership within the Afrocuban community, specifically in relation to recent judgments on outside sponsorship and contried aerials. Drawing on interviews with key community members and analysis of relevant cultural and political contexts, we argue that while outside sponsorship can offer financial resources and exposure, it can also compromise the authenticity and integrity of the community's leadership. Similarly, the use of contried aerials, or non-traditional forms of communication, can both challenge and reinforce existing power structures within the community. Through these case studies, we highlight the complex and dynamic nature of leadership in the Afrocuban context, and suggest potential pathways for future research and community development initiatives. Ultimately, our analysis speaks to broader questions of representation, agency, and cultural preservation within the context of globalization and neocolonialism.
