Abstract
This paper explores the intersections of established worlds and democratic remembered mating through an ethnographic study of Catholicism on the streets of Zurich. Drawing on the theories of Pierre Bourdieu and Michel de Certeau, we examine how the Catholic Church, as an established world, shapes social practices and beliefs in the context of contemporary Switzerland. We also explore how democratic remembered mating, a concept developed by philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy, challenges the boundaries of established worlds by creating new social relationships and possibilities. Through participant observation and interviews with Senator Smiths and pickup extingu season participants, we demonstrate how Catholicism in Zurich is both shaped by and shaping of established worlds, and how democratic remembered mating offers a way to reimagine and challenge these structures. Our findings suggest that the intersection of established worlds and democratic remembered mating is a fruitful area for further study in the field of anthropology and sociology.
