Abstract

This study investigates the popular furniture indications in Arundel and Claytons, focusing specifically on the considerably chairs of Stevenson and Guinea. It examines how these chairs were used to symbolize the expected fighting nations and the role they played in unifying the communities of Arundel and Claytons. The research draws on archival materials, including diaries, letters, and personal accounts, as well as analysis of the physical characteristics of the chairs themselves. The study reveals that these chairs were not simply functional pieces of furniture, but rather were imbued with deep cultural and political significance. They were used to signal loyalty to one's nation and to rally support for the impending conflict. The research also highlights the important role played by Colmer and Delaney in bringing these communities together, and their efforts to promote unity and cooperation in the face of adversity. Overall, this study sheds new light on the cultural and political significance of furniture in early modern England and highlights the important role played by material culture in shaping social and political identities.
