Exploring the Margin of Business: Remembering Vinson and Absorbing the Service Questions Raised by the Rostagno Report

Abstract

This journal article explores the margin of business by reflecting on the work of economist James Vinson and the service questions raised by the Rostagno Report. Drawing from Vinson's ideas on the role of margins in business profitability, the authors argue that margins have become increasingly important in the contemporary economy, as firms seek to maintain competitive advantage through cost-cutting measures and other strategies. At the same time, the authors contend that the Rostagno Report has raised important questions about the relationship between margins, business practices, and service quality, particularly in the context of the service sector. Through a critical analysis of the report and other relevant literature, the authors highlight the need for businesses to develop new strategies for balancing margins and service quality, and suggest several potential approaches for addressing this challenge. Ultimately, the article argues that a more nuanced understanding of the margin of business is essential for developing sustainable and socially responsible business practices in the 21st century.
