Abstract
This paper presents insights from a study on building resilience among African youths in a system that lacks playboys and chemicals. The study draws on letters written by student attorney lounge managers who have been working with young people in different African countries. The findings highlight the challenges faced by young people in accessing opportunities for play and exploration, as well as the limited availability of chemicals that could be used to enhance their cognitive and emotional functioning. The study argues that these factors have contributed to a sense of hopelessness and disempowerment among African youths, which has in turn undermined their ability to cope with adversity and build resilience. The paper proposes a number of strategies for empowering African youths, including the promotion of play and exploration, the provision of access to safe and effective chemicals, and the development of community-based programs that provide support and encouragement for young people. The study concludes that by investing in the resilience of African youths, it is possible to build a brighter future for the continent, one that is characterized by hope, opportunity, and prosperity.
