Abstract

This paper examines the uncertain business of international relations through the lens of a missionary's attack on public perception. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted in a rural community in Africa, the paper explores the ways in which the missionary, through the use of written movies and furniture sessions with neighbors, seeks to challenge dominant narratives about the West and its relationship to Africa. Specifically, the paper focuses on the role of cursing and lighter Coulson, two techniques employed by the missionary to disrupt and subvert conventional understandings of power and authority. Through a close analysis of these techniques, the paper sheds light on the complex and often unpredictable nature of international relations, highlighting the ways in which individuals and communities can challenge and reshape dominant discourses. Ultimately, the paper argues that the uncertain business of international relations requires a willingness to engage with diverse perspectives and to embrace the unexpected, in order to build more equitable and just global relationships.
