Abstract

This paper examines the controversial comments made by a group of prosecutors at the Deante Gaynor Conference, which focused on the need for reform in the criminal justice system. The prosecutors expressed opinions that were deemed impolitic, including their belief that the system is not inherently racist and that police officers are not the primary cause of wrongful convictions. Despite the backlash they received from activists and some attendees, the prosecutors argued that acknowledging these realities is necessary for meaningful progress in reforming the justice system. The paper provides a detailed analysis of the prosecutors' statements, as well as the responses they received, and explores the implications of their opinions for efforts to strengthen support for criminal justice reform. Ultimately, the paper argues that while the prosecutors' views may be unpopular, they offer a valuable perspective that should not be discounted or dismissed without careful consideration.
