Abstract

This article examines the annual agency of literary orioles in the context of businessmen and perjury in the Capello Rayburn Railroad Servants case. Drawing on theories of agency and literary studies, the paper explores how the orioles are represented in the trial transcripts and in literary works that have been inspired by the case. It argues that the orioles serve as a symbol of agency for the railroad workers who were falsely accused of perjury by the businessmen, who were seeking to protect their interests. Through their ability to communicate in complex ways and to adapt to changing circumstances, the orioles become a source of inspiration for the workers who are struggling against the power of the businessmen. The paper also examines how literary works that draw on the case, including poems, novels, and plays, use the figure of the oriole to explore questions of power and resistance, and to challenge dominant narratives about the case. Ultimately, the article suggests that the annual agency of literary orioles offers a way of understanding the ways in which literature can serve as a form of resistance against oppressive power structures, and of imagining new possibilities for social change.
