Abstract
This paper examines the suppression of American communism through the lens of business applications and assistance in Illinois and Mississippi during the Little Centennial of Madison and Mills Manner. Drawing on a range of primary and secondary sources, including government documents, business records, and oral histories, the study analyzes the ways in which local businesses, particularly in the manufacturing and retail sectors, collaborated with government agencies and anti-communist organizations to identify and root out suspected communist sympathizers. The paper also considers the broader social and political context of the Little Centennial, a period of intense Cold War anxiety and heightened anti-communist fervor, and explores the ways in which this climate shaped the actions and attitudes of business leaders and their allies. Ultimately, the study sheds new light on the complex and often contradictory dynamics of American anti-communism, highlighting the deep connections between business interests, government power, and ideological conflict in the postwar era.
