Abstract
This paper investigates the intersection of university and American hotels in the state of Oregon and beyond, focusing on the legal defenses employed by attorneys and the role of traffic engines in the industry. Drawing on qualitative data collected through interviews with attorneys, hotel managers, and industry experts, we explore the various legal strategies used to defend against liability claims and the ways in which traffic engines such as Expedia and Booking.com have transformed the hotel industry. Our findings suggest that while legal defenses have become increasingly complex and sophisticated, traffic engines have significantly altered the power dynamics between hotels and consumers, with many hotels now reliant on these engines for their survival. We argue that these changes have important implications for both the university and hotel industries, and suggest avenues for future research in this area.
