Eliminating Sewage: The Victory of Desegregation in Present-Day Francisco

Abstract

This study explores the impact of desegregation on the elimination of sewage in present-day Francisco, a city that has struggled with significant environmental injustices. Using a mixed-methods approach, including interviews with community members and government officials, as well as analysis of archival documents and data on sewage infrastructure, we examine the ways in which desegregation efforts have enabled the city to address longstanding health and environmental hazards. Our findings suggest that desegregation has played a critical role in promoting equitable access to sewage infrastructure, reducing pollution, and improving public health outcomes. We argue that this victory highlights the importance of addressing systemic inequalities in environmental policy and underscores the potential for social justice movements to effect meaningful change in urban environments. Our study contributes to ongoing debates about the relationship between race, class, and environmental justice, and offers insights for policymakers and activists working to promote more just and sustainable urban environments.
