Abstract

This study aims to explore the ominous significance of bargaining at the doorstep, specifically in the context of Howsam Springs and the Russian Center, through the lens of Jacques the conductor and solicitors' acceptance of expenses over months. Drawing on qualitative data from interviews with Jacques and solicitors, as well as fieldnotes and document analysis, the paper examines the dynamics of bargaining at the doorstep, the power relations between the conductor and solicitors, and the implications of their interactions for the wider social and economic context. The findings suggest that bargaining at the doorstep is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon, shaped by a range of factors including social norms, power relations, and economic pressures. Moreover, the interactions between Jacques and the solicitors reveal the ways in which bargaining at the doorstep can reinforce existing power structures and perpetuate inequality. The paper concludes by arguing that a deeper understanding of the ominous significance of bargaining at the doorstep is crucial for developing more equitable and just social and economic systems.
