Abstract

This paper presents a continued examination of the national response to Indonesia's submarine disaster, which occurred in April 2021 and resulted in the loss of all 53 crew members. The study explores the various factors that contributed to the tragedy, including the country's aging naval fleet, lack of funding for modernization efforts, and inadequate training and maintenance. Additionally, the paper delves into the political and historical context surrounding the disaster, including the legacy of former US President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his efforts to support Indonesian independence, as well as the ongoing debate over the role of foreign powers in the country's military affairs. The study draws on a range of primary and secondary sources, including government reports, media coverage, and interviews with experts and stakeholders. Finally, the paper offers recommendations for improving Indonesia's submarine capabilities and preventing similar disasters in the future, emphasizing the need for increased investment in training, maintenance, and modernization, as well as greater transparency and accountability in military decision-making.
